September 19th, 2019 BY Jon Tidey2 Comments

Time for another Q&A episode ! As always you’ve been asking great questions, so in this episode we discuss:

  • Why Ian talks too much
  • How dynamic is too dynamic ?
  • Fade-outs - before or after compression ?
  • How has the loudness war changed production and arrangement styles ?
  • Mastering for gaming streams (like Twitch TV)
  • Mastering in different genres

  1. Hi. Thanks for the great podcast. I have a question.

You mentioned that in order to avoid intersample peaks, you should set the max output of your limiter to - 1 dB instead of - 0.1 or - 0.3 etc. even if you are using the Fab Filter Pro L 2. But the Pro L 2 has true peak limiting in it which, as far as I know, alerts you of any intersample peaks that are going to occur. So in that case, if we are using the Pro L 2 with the output limit set at - 0.1 and it shows that no intersample peaks are occurring, why is that wrong? Is it just because even if Pro L 2 detects no intersample peaks and the bounced wav is perfect, intersample peaks could be introduced when the wav is converted to mp3? Is that the only reason you suggest setting the limiter output to - 1 when using the Pro L 2? Or are there additional reasons for doing so?
