The Mastering Show #10 - Dynamic Range Day

Why “Dynamic Range Day” is a really bad name. And come to think of it, why "dynamic range” probably isn’t what you think it is. And neither are “dynamics”! And why the Loudness War hasn’t changed them. At least, not one kind - or not in the way that you think. Because physics. It’s complicated!

Plus special bonus topics: Autotune and Taylor Swift (!)

  1. I like the name. It made me research just what it means. That led me to the Loudness Wars and that led me to your petition. That led me to placing your video and Matt's video, on my website to show Podcasters, what the Pros thought about Loudness. Just so you know, if you say Triple D to a guy in America, he will start looking around for a Woman with Biggens. Keep the "R" in. Cheers. <-- Look at me! I'm turning British listening to you guys. p.s. I would have never guessed Taylor was louder then the others mentioned!

  2. Ian,

    Comment:
    Maybe include a sub-title...

    DYNAMIC RANGE DAY
    It's all about the dynamics!

I'm trying to assemble all this great information so I can apply it. I first want a rock solid understanding, before I master my first album!

    Question:
I have an album I want to master. Initially, just using a limiter and multi-band compression (No EQ yet), I want to đetermine the loudness and dynamics. I'm also using info from your videos. How should I proceed, do I...

    A. First, set the Integrated LUFS (PLR) to, say, -10.0 LUFS and let the Short-term LUFS (PSR) readings vary, as long as they are no louder than -8.0 LUFS, or...

    B. First, set the Short-term LUFS (PSR) to, say, -8.0 LUFS (PSR) and let the Integrated LUFS readings vary (-10.0 LUFS to -12.0 LUFS)?

    A or B?

    Thanks!

  3. I have Dynameter, and use it regularly to monitor my mixes. I do struggle to keep it above 8 on tracks that have distorted guitars as a major component. These (guitars) are pretty much dynamic range challenged as part and parcel of how the sounds are produced. What a good approach for getting around this?

  4. I must say, the James Blake album is intoxicating my existence, the beauty, the tones, the emotion.. all enhancing my world from listening to this podcast. Forever grateful.
