In this show Ian talks to the fabulous Sylvia Massy about her fantastic new book, "Recording Unhinged" - and how perhaps mastering could be a little more unhinged sometimes, too. Topics include:
Ian's first ever mastering project (although he didn't know it at the time)
Recording underwater brass
Why gaffer-taping Peter Gabriel to a column wasn't such a bad idea
How to make a REALLY hidden track on CD
How to record like Harry Potter
What Sylvia does to prepare her music for mastering, and why
Thank's for that, a top podcast. Queens of the Stone Age album Songs for the Deaf, Song 1 starts off in a car with the DJ talking on the radio. If you fast rewind you will get an additional 15-20 seconds of the DJ on the radio. Keep up the good work.
Great podcast with Sylvia, I really like that you started to interview interesting people from the industry! Keep up the great work, looking forward to the next episodes.
Sylvia is great! Thanks for interviewing her - such interesting subjects!
I purchased Sylvia's book and was fortunate enough to have her sign it at the last Sweetwater Gearfest event, as well as some of her great art that she graciously offered.
Her book is great and I consider it an important read for audio engineers. It is not only a very fun collection of stories, but it presents viewpoints and experiences of many top engineers and producers on a wide range of subjects.
Recording Unhinged gets into the mind of the artist and the engineer rather than simply presenting the science of recording the sound. I consider it the most important audio engineering educational book I own.
Thought you might like to know that I'm using this episode as a reference track for my own podcast mastering (still very amateur hour). 😀 Great work in general on the show!
I'm intrigued by what she called pre-mastering. I want to know more about it. You could do a whole show on that topic. (hint, hint)
